The beginning of the Whirlpool Rapids can be seen below the Michigan Central Railway Bridge. The bridge was built in 1924 to replace an existing cantilever bridge which was located about 100 feet up river. The railway is roughly 240 feet above the river. The bridge has been closed since 2001. The silver bridge just beyond it is the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge.
