Birthplace of Niagara Falls

Photo © by Scott A. Ensminger

The birthplace of Niagara Falls. Roughly 12,500 years ago the Niagara River started flowing over the Niagara Escarpment about 0.4 of a mile north of where this photo was taken from. When the falls first formed it may have been only 35 feet in height. The river is about 325 feet below this point. Ontario, Canada is to the left of the river with New York, USA to the right. On a very clear day you can see the City of Toronto, Ontario across Lake Ontario. The city is roughly 40 miles north northwest of this location.

For waterfalls you can visit in the
western half of New York State click here.
