The dam is roughly 90 feet wide and is the site of the first mill built in the Town of Phelps by Seth Dean in 1793. The present stone dam was built by Henry Whitney in the late 1890's. The falls has also been called Main Street Falls, Dean Falls, Old Mill Falls, and today is known locally as "The Falls at the Dam."

Phelps Rapids      On the south side of Route 96, a little over 0.8 of a mile west of the intersection with Route 88 in the Village of Phelps, is a parking area for the Ontario Pathways hiking trail. Follow the trail southwards for roughly 0.35 of a mile from Route 96 when you will come to a bench on the side of the trail. A short distance to the right (west) is a series of creek wide rapids with a total height of 10 feet.
The area is a popular spot with kayakers in the springtime.
